Advertising, Marketing, PR, Content Creators & Influencers: What’s the Difference (and Why It Matters for Your Business)

In today’s crowded digital world, every business is told they need marketing, advertising, PR, social media content, or influencers.  But these terms often get mixed up, and many business owners waste time and money on the wrong strategy.

We’ve heard people say you must spend at least two hours a day simply on marketing - which leaves you no time to actually serve your customers.  We think this is a ploy to get people to outsource their marketing.  We also heard one organisation saying they had an “extensive team” marketing one single event twenty-four-seven!  Really?

We’ve heard how people need multiple channels (horizontal) and multiple pillars (vertical).  Confused?  We’re not surprised.  Baffling a potential customer doesn’t make the other person the expert!

At Barnett Photo Studio, we believe success starts with clarity. As specialists in Advertising, Business, and Commercial Photography & Video, our mission is simple: to help brands create Emotional Magic™ that connects with customers and drives sales.

So let’s break down the differences—and explain why working with proven professionals matters if you want real results.

Advertising

Advertising is “paid, strategic promotion”—the advertising hoardings you see, the ads in magazines, TV or radio, the targeted campaigns on Google or Facebook.  The goal of advertising is simple: draw attention to the brand and sell your product or service.

Great advertising isn’t just about pretty pictures.  It’s about creating visuals that stop people in their tracks and inspire them to take action.  People buy with feelings based on emotional responses - everything from luxury goods to everyday essentials.  That’s where we come in.  With years of experience in business and advertising, we craft cost-effective images and video that are designed to sell, not just look good.  They are designed to bring a return on investment.

Marketing

Marketing is the “bigger picture”.  It’s everything that builds awareness and keeps your brand in front of the right people—your website, emails, social media, events, and yes, advertising too.  There is positioning involved, and long-term strategies, sometimes planned over several years.

Think of marketing as the engine, and advertising as the fuel.  Without strong imagery and campaigns that connect emotionally, the engine stops.  With our expertise, we provide the kind of content that gives marketing its real power.

Public Relations (PR)

PR is all about reputation and credibility.  It’s the press coverage, the media mentions, the stories in local or national outlets that build trust.  PR is not direct selling—it’s influence.  A big sporting event, or a music concert will advertise itself, and market the event under a promotional banner.  The PR people will handle the press enquires, interviews, the statements that are released.  This is really for large international companies and events.

But even PR needs visuals.  Journalists, bloggers, and editors look for strong, professional images to tell a story.  That’s why businesses with professional photography and video in their PR mix are far more likely to get noticed.

Content Creators

Content creators produce (usually their own) images, videos, and posts for online platforms.  Some are talented hobbyists, others are professionals.  Some are very effective by just being “themselves”.  They’re great for keeping social media active and adding personality to a brand.  But, as they are untrained there are numerous stories where they have fallen foul of advertising laws, and some have found themselves blocked or banned from various channels.

But when it comes to YOUR brand, the business that is so important to you, with high-stakes campaigns—ads that need to move the needle—you want more than content.  You want proven strategy, commercial polish, and storytelling that resonates.  That’s where Barnett Photo Studio’s experience makes the difference.

Influencers

Influencers are people who’ve built an audience online.  Partnering with them means tapping into their followers.  Make sure their values align with yours.  They have the influence and you can’t always control what they might say or do that could indirectly backfire on you.  Done right, it can be powerful—but it only works if the visuals and the campaign align with your brand and message.

Without strong advertising photography and video at the core, even the biggest influencer shout-out can fall flat.

Why the Right Choice Matters

Each of these tools—advertising, marketing, PR, content creators, influencers—has its place.  But choosing the wrong one (or trying to do everything at once without strategy) is where businesses lose time and money.

The difference?  Experience.
